Correspondent Banking
Structure Framework
Correspondent relationships are extended to institutions that can evidence who is behind every payment they pass on, which is why nested arrangements are now scrutinised hardest. We build the structure to withstand that review — account and routing architecture, respondent due diligence, sanctions and transaction monitoring, payment message standards, and clearing and reconciliation.
THE SPECIFICATION
Architecture & Audience
Correspondent banking is how money crosses a border. A domestic institution holds accounts with banks abroad, or with banks that hold them, and settles through that chain. Access has contracted sharply: correspondents have withdrawn from whole regions, and an institution without a route has a licence it cannot use.
Banks and licensed institutions establishing or restoring cross-border settlement; institutions in jurisdictions where correspondents have withdrawn; and groups consolidating fragmented nostro arrangements.
What We Deliver
A complete architecture, designed, launched, and managed
We analyse the institution’s payment flows by currency, corridor, and volume to determine which correspondent relationships it actually needs and which add cost without access. The analysis drives the relationship strategy rather than the other way around.
We assess correspondent bank appetite for the institution’s risk profile, jurisdiction, and client base before any approach is made. Knowing which correspondents will engage and on what terms prevents wasted time on relationships that will not clear compliance.
We prepare the institution for the correspondent due diligence process: governance documentation, AML policy, transaction monitoring evidence, and the management information the correspondent will request before opening an account. Preparation determines acceptance speed.
We prepare the Wolfsberg Questionnaire responses and supporting due diligence documentation to the standard correspondent compliance teams expect. Documentation is accurate, current, and maintained as a living set, not assembled under time pressure for each approach.
We manage the correspondent approach process and negotiate the account and pricing terms on the institution’s behalf. Terms are benchmarked against market and negotiated to reflect the institution’s actual risk profile rather than a correspondent’s standard rate card.
We implement the SWIFT or alternative messaging and settlement configuration that connects the institution to its correspondents. Configuration is tested end-to-end before the relationship goes live and documented for the institution’s operations team.
We implement or calibrate the transaction monitoring controls to meet the standard the correspondent bank requires, not only the minimum the institution’s regulator accepts. The correspondent’s standard often exceeds the local minimum and is what determines whether the relationship holds.
We support the institution through the correspondent’s periodic review process: updating documentation, responding to questionnaires, and preparing the management information that demonstrates the institution’s controls remain effective. Reviews are anticipated, not reacted to.
We identify and maintain contingency correspondent routes for each critical currency and corridor, so that if a primary correspondent withdraws, the institution has a tested alternative ready rather than facing an operational crisis in real time.
